Overview

The Sheep and Pastures specialty group have returned to 2008 with new vigour. As a forward thinking group they are focused on the current issues to keep sheep on farm. Stay tuned for new trials and demonstrations throughout the coming year.  

 

Strategic Goal

The Sheep and Pastures Group will lead the change to ensure profitable, easy to manage, environmentally and ethically responsible and sustainable sheep enterprises.

 

Top 5 priorities the sheep and pastures group will tackle are:  

  • Influence/ Educate community perception of our sheep industry.

  •  Increasing/ improving production cost p/ha AND maximum production p/ha

  • Assisting members through ed and info, to consider all facts when moving from wool to meat. Eg genetics, factsheets and case studies.

  • Looking at sheep enterprises as a profitable part of the whole farm business. Eg utilisation of all resources inc salt effected land.

  • Meeting Market needs

 

Trials & Demonstrations

Opportunities for Winter Cereal Grazing within the Mixed Farm System

The grazing of cereal crops is a common occurrence within the eastern states with the aim of shifting the flowering window of crops to reduce the risk of frost damage whilst also getting the benefit of quality feed for stock whilst pastures have time to establish.  One of the Facey Group's innovative farming families conducted a farm scale demonstration in 2009 which was presented at the 2010 Trials Presentation Evening.  Opportunities for Grazing findings

Research partners, play a key role in the Group’s on ground trials and research.  With out the continued support of research partners and their willingness to invest significant dollars into the Upper Great Southern farming community.

 

 

Sheep and Pastures Events

All events are tailored to members requests in light of variables such as economic climate and livestock and land conditions at the time of the events. Previously the group has hosted pasture walks, workshops in partnership with MLA, numerous pasture trials and more money from pastures expo as well as much more.
